Wallflower blooms at Melton Mowbray Spring Sale

The British White Cattle Society Spring Sale saw a strong entry forward on Saturday 4th May at Melton Mowbray Market, where prices peaked at 1700gns for two-year-old bulling heifer Alcroft Wallflower 5 from S Cook, Cambridge. Sired by Nidderdale Alladin (EX91), this heifer had been shown successfully throughout 2023, and now travels to The Newt in Somerset to take her place in the Emily herd.

Also selling from the Cook family were three more bulling heifers sired by Nidderdale Alladin (EX91); Alcroft Pepper at 1520gns, Albany Okoye at 1400gns, and Albany Osaka at 1380gns, all three knocked down to the Norfolk Wildlife Trust to expand their growing breeding herd, which is now a core part of the Trust’s wider grazing herd of British White cattle used to maintain nature reserves covering many areas of Norfolk.

From the Oldington herd of P Pennington, Bridgnorth, came the in-calf two-year-old heifer Oldington Ariel, sired by Templar Jethro (VG86) and sold to The Newt in Somerset for 1500gns, followed in quick succession by three more smart heifers at the same price; the yearling Templar Nymph 220 from K & RP Harding, Heather, along with two-year-olds Bulby Weigela and Bulby Rampion from J & S Bevan, Bourne.

The Newt in Somerset also made their own Society Sale selling debut at this event, bringing forward three cracking homebred entries; Emily Hollyhock sired by Tollesbury Sir Lamorah, and Emily Orchid and Emily Amaryllis both sired by Anglesey Jonny English, each knocked down at 1300gns to J Robb, Aylesbury.

Whilst trade on the day seemed relatively calm compared to some recent sales, the quality of the stock certainly did not disappoint, and the Society commends its members on yet another impressive selection of cattle forward for buyers to choose from. The BWCS is also grateful to Melton Mowbray Market for their repeated hard work in hosting these Society Sales to such a high standard, and for the quality of service provided to our vendors and buyers.

15 heifers (6 in-calf and 9 maidens) sold to average 1232gns (£1293.60)
