YOUR REQUIREMENTS

YOUR REQUIREMENTS

Take time to consider your available land area and type, potential stocking rate, and the aims or purpose the animals will be fulfilling.

This will help to determine where and when to source the most suitable stock, giving the best chance of success from the start.

SOURCING THE RIGHT STOCK

SOURCING THE RIGHT STOCK

When you are ready to purchase, there are various places to find the right animals for you.
The BWCS website has a thriving ‘Cattle for Sale’ section full of members’ adverts. General herd adverts can also be found in our Breed Journal.
You can also contact the BWCS direct with your requirements to be circulated to our members, who can then contact you directly with details of suitable stock for sale.

CORRECT RECORD KEEPING

CORRECT RECORD KEEPING

Always ensure that you have in place a reliable method for recording and reporting cattle movements, births and deaths, as well as keeping strict medicine and breeding records.

For any enquiries regarding holding registration, cattle identification or movements, contact the British Cattle Movement Service (BCMS).

ONGOING MANAGEMENT

ONGOING MANAGEMENT

Setting out a plan for nutrition, breeding, and general practices such as health testing and vaccination, weight monitoring, etc. can all aid in the overall management of your herd.

If in doubt, feel free to contact the BWCS with any questions - we’re here to help!

A variety of voluntary Herd Health Schemes are available, which provide testing/vaccination via your vet practice to achieve accreditation from common infectious diseases of cattle.

Your vet may also be able to advise whether there are any potential risks in your local area to vaccinate for, such as clostridial diseases.

The AHDB Knowledge Library provides a series of excellent guides on everything from health and welfare, to nutrition and management, to carcase traits and classification; just visit ahdb.org.uk.

Selling top quality British White beef direct to consumer, or to a specialist outlet which appreciates the product’s excellence, is a good way to achieve the highest price for your pure and crossbred British White finishing cattle.

Marketing your breeding herd by participating in pedigree shows and sales can help to build a strong reputation for producing good stock, in turn commanding higher prices for sale animals.

If pedigree breeding isn't for you, add value to the progeny of purebred British White suckler cows and heifers by using a terminal sire and selling calves as stores or as finished cattle.
