Supplying a wonderful line-up of entries to open the 2025 show season at South Suffolk Show on Sunday 11 May, breeders were met with ideal conditions and enjoyed a pleasant morning’s competition in the sunshine. The British White breed classes were again one of the best-supported sections at the show, with judge Denis Jenkins – a former Norfolk resident now based near Lancaster – in charge of awarding the prizes.

Breed Champion Tollesbury Tarzan

Mr Jenkins’ deliberations concluded with his selection of the Breed Champion Tollesbury Tarzan, bred and owned by AV & AKM St Joseph. A February 2023-born son of the accoladed bull Castleton Brenin (EX95), Tarzan was presented with both the Clark & Butcher Challenge Cup for Breed Champion, and the Parker Bros Challenge Trophy for Male Champion, both trophies returning to the Essex-based St Joseph family for the second year in a row.

The Cresswell Challenge Shield for the Female Champion was awarded to Mrs A Dunn for the aptly named De Beauvoir Smart Sally (VG85), a four-year-old second calver which looked a fantastic advert for the breed in the showring alongside Tollesbury Tarzan, particularly pleasing when both champions happened to be sired by the same bull! Smart Sally previously won the Cresswell Shield at this event as a senior heifer, and she returned this time as a strong young cow in milk with her bull calf Smart Spartacus at foot.

A final trophy was awarded for the Best British White Heifer, which was also won for the second year in a row by the same animal; March 2023-born Alcroft Gloria, bred and owned by Miss S Cook, Cambridge. Sired by Alcroft Gunslinger (VG89) and out of Alcroft Glory (VG85), this exhibit won a strong class of senior heifers and was also awarded the Reserve Female Championship.

The Reserve Male Championship went to another from the Tollesbury herd; the junior bull Tollesbury Dragon, bred and owned by AV & AKM St Joseph. Another by the prolific Castleton Brenin (EX95), this yearling was born in March 2024 and was shown at this event at the foot of his mother Tollesbury Diamond (VG88) that year, where she picked up both the Female and Reserve Breed Championships.
