Show & Sale Report: Melton Mowbray

Strong support from a large number of vendors and bidders once again made for a successful weekend for the British White breed at the Melton Mowbray Native & Traditional Breeds Sale, held on Friday 8th & Saturday 9th September.

With mother and daughter judging team Hayley and Abbie Higginson of the Meadowlands herd, Cheshire, casting their eyes over the show classes on Friday, it was maiden heifer Woodbastwick Homily from R H Farms, Norfolk, which took the Breed Championship ahead of classmate Templar Magic, bred and exhibited by K & RP Harding, Leicestershire in reserve. The Male Championship went to the yearling bull Cadarn Cargo from Mark Kennett, travelling all the way from Ceredigion to attend the event for the first time.

On sale day, it was a run of smart maiden heifers which saw the top prices, reaching a peak of 3,000gns (£3,150) for Templar Mab from K & RP Harding, 2,900gns (£3,045) for the Breed Champion Woodbastwick Homily from R H Farms, and 2,400gns (£2,520) for Woodbastwick Daisy Duke from the same vendor, all three 2022-born heifers selling to the Emily Estate, Somerset.

Also heading to the Emily Estate at 2,500gns (£2,625) and 1,900gns (£1,995) respectively were two offerings from the Tollesbury herd; firstly Tollesbury Honey Moon (EX90) with her February-born bull calf Tollesbury Hubble at foot, followed by in-calf heifer Tollesbury Cinnamon, both females being sold in-calf to homebred stock bull Tollesbury Pirate (EX91).

Having made the long trip from Cardigan Bay, the consignment of four heifers from the Cadarn herd of Mark Kennett and Jane Finney sold to a top of 1,700gns (£1,785) for Cadarn Finesse, a well-grown yearling sired by Amaroo Pear Drop, and 1,450gns (£1,522) for the in-calf Cadarn Manuka, also by the same sire.
