Maiden heifers sell to 1150gns for Cadarn herd at Welshpool

Held at Welshpool Market on Saturday 21 September, the breeding section of this Society-supported Autumn Sale saw two strong packets of very smart maiden heifers from the Oldington and Cadarn herds bought somewhat modestly for the prevailing quality on offer. Topping the female lots was the March '23-born Cadarn Starburst from M Kennett, Ceredigion, selling for 1,150gns (£1,207) to the Pennington family, Bridgnorth. Sired by Amaroo Pear Drop and out of Cadarn Silver Lady (VG88), this well-grown heifer finds a new home in the Oldington herd just across the border into Shropshire.

Picking up two good 2023-born heifers for his Waun Wern herd was M Jones, Llanpumpsaint, who purchased another Amaroo Pear Drop daughter Cadarn Sorbet for 1,000gns, along with Oldington Tina Turner - sired by Templar Jethro (VG86) - for 800gns. Two more Cadarn heifers - Manyana and Pea Soup - reached 750 and 730gns respectively, both superb weaned calves at just under 10 months of age and as strong as the rest of the pen, selling to D & E Davies, Oswestry.

The store cattle section met a good trade, with the heaviest of four pure and crossbred British White yearling steers from A Hamilton, Carmarthen, selling to 1,220gns (£1,281) and the pen averaging £1,084/head.

Thanks go to the team at Welshpool Livestock Sales for their hard work and expertise, to the breeders for turning out a strong showing of what the breed has to offer, and to the buyers for supporting them.
