Returning to claim the prestigious Royal Welsh Show BWCS Breed Championship for a whopping third year in a row was the senior bull class winner Castleton Ken, bred and exhibited by CMB, JAW & DM Wright from Tretower, Powys. Judged on Monday 21 July by Brian Palmer, founder of the acclaimed Porlock herd in Somerset, the British White breed classes were full of quality and well-supported by the exhibitors across every section.

The Wright family’s homebred stock bull Castleton Ken took a quick break from working in the herd to attend the show, rewarded by winning both the Legge-Bourke Perpetual Challenge Trophy for Breed Champion and the Nant-Y-Rhos Perpetual Challenge Trophy for Male Champion, adding to previous wins in 2023 and 2024. Standing as the Reserve Breed and Reserve Male Champion was another from the senior bull class, Cadarn Sentinel (VG87) exhibited by Eyre Farms, Welshpool, a bull bred by Mark Kennett which has been working as a senior stock sire in Lucy Eyre’s Diskin herd since 2023. These two top-placed exhibits showcased the high standard of working bulls in the British White breed today, serving as two outstanding examples of the quality of stock currently available from our Welsh breeders.

The winner of the Dallyashes Perpetual Challenge Trophy for Female Champion was senior heifer Cadarn Cantaloupe, bred and exhibited by Mark Kennett and Jane Finney, Ceredigion. This win marks a significant and well-deserved milestone for the herd, as this was unbelievably only the first time the Kennett’s have received a trophy at the Royal Welsh Show. Having supported the event since the establishment of their herd in 2007 and supplied many homebred animals into other herds which have gone on to achieve success, it was wonderful to see not one but two Cadarn animals in the spotlight this time.

Other class winners came from the Dallyashes herd of Angie Hamilton, Llanpumsaint, whose junior heifer Dallyashes Liaison was awarded the Reserve Female Championship after winning the maiden heifer section, and 2020-born cow Dallyashes Tapestry (VG88) won the class for senior females in milk or in calf. The winner of the junior bull class was yearling Waun Wern Lamington from Mathew Jones, also of Llanpumsaint.
